THE MIGHTY BATMOBILE
The Batmobile was built by George Barris, King of the Kustomers, from a 50's experimental show car (The Lincoln Futura) for the hit TV show. There where 3 replicas Barris made for touring car shows, etc., but only the Metal Futura was ever used in the TV series
The 1954 Futura was originally coined as "the car of the future.' Designed at Ford studios, a full scale clay model was made. The steel body was done in Italy and the final cost was in the millions. After the car toured for a couple years, it was bought from Ford by George Barris for 1 dollar! Barris painted the car red for the 1959 movie 'IT STARTED WITH A KISS' starring Glenn Ford and Debbie Reynolds. (By the way, it is in color and now out on video)
In the mid 60's Barris was approached by 20th Century Fox. Fox needed a rush job on the Batmobile. It was decided at the stuido that The Batman Series, due out the following season, was now going to be a mid-season replacement . Barris and his shop had only 3 weeks to complete the Batmobile, now known as the most recognized car in the world.
